This was my first comic book and I was surprised at how well the medium worked for portraying the life of a man who lived through the Holocaust. The comic allowed for a natural flow between the time in the war and ordinary moments between a father and son decades later. Spiegelman embraces his father's whole story, talking about the tragedy and trauma he endured, his resourcefulness and resilience, and also the prejudice and harm he perpetuated himself.

What can I say that hadn't already been said. It's an honest story not only of a Holocaust survivor, but of the relationship between a father and his son. At times, you feel for Vlad (the father), at times you feel for Art (the son), but you will always feel for Anja.

Incredibly brutal, moving and personal. A book everyone should read.

This is a masterpiece. There is so much to praise about this book; tackling the holocaust in the format of a graphic novel, the relationship between father & son, the warmth and human emotions that carry though the art, the meta nature of the work and a telling reminder of the best and worst of human nature.

too powerful, too painful to read.. but an essential read to understand the boundlessness of human cruelty and the horrors of the 20th century.
