Raw, honest, a true masterpiece. To tell a story this hard in this way is really what makes art. I cried multiple times, this book dives into history, psychology, guilt, emotions and situations beyond human understanding. It makes you sad and angry. So many things to say, I loved it deeply. To use such medium to visually show how stupid it is to discriminate based on race was beyond effective. I just finished it so I'm in loss of words I only know the hole in my heart and the everlasting feeling I know this will have.

I saw a video of a Jewish survivor saying "You should be able to make up for anything, any mistake in your life. But this... This should never had happened. Never."

If you told me I was going to read a book about the holocaust, I never would have expected it would be in a comic book form. I am however, extremely grateful for this reading experience.

Form is a powerful tool, and in my opinion, just as powerful as the text that it encompasses. It is those writers who take form and convention and throw it out that window that are revolutionary.

The metatextual aspect of this comic is also a very thought provoking element. Where Spiegelman ventures into himself to explore what he is doing, the reader is challenged with doing the very same thing. The story is told in a highly complex manner with many layers.

Excellently done.

The way this book not only talks about the atrocities of the war and holocaust but also gives you glimpses of the personalities of the characters makes this experience so much more devastating. The unexpected personal details, the shattering unfairness and the degradation of the human being just leaves you blank and shattered…

Amazing. Wow. What can I say about this graphic memoir that hasn't already been said? It's such a gut-wrenching portrait of a holocaust survivor. Even more gut-wrenching is the relationship between Vladek and his son Art, the writer and cartoonist he's telling his story to. They're relationship is difficult, colored by Vladek's extreme trauma from surviving as both a prisoner of war AND from Auschwitz. He also loses his wife to suicide when Art is 20. Despite the pain and suffering, Vladek's story of survival is remarkable. The man was genius. He always thought 10 steps ahead of everyone and it was his stunning intellect that allowed him to get him and his wife out alive.

The comic style is dense but simple, with no color but a lot of symbolism. Students seemed affected by it in a way they I haven't seen before. There's just something so powerful about the comic book images combined with Vladek's story that make the holocaust seem so much more palpable and horrifying than just reading words in a memoir.
