Colleen Hoover’s writing style gives me strong millennial wattpad vibes (said lovingly as a millennial who read wattpad back in the day). It’s compulsively readable except for the times when I need to physical put the book down because I cringed so hard. I definitely understand the appeal, but I’m not sure this really worked for me in 2024.
As a Colleen Hoover fan, I can say this isn't my favorite book of hers, but as an avid reader, I can say that doesn't take away from the fact that this is still a great book. While this book took me a bit longer to read than some of her others (a day instead of a few hours), I still enjoyed the parallel stories being told by the two main narrators. Hoover writes her novels from the perspective of the two main characters, but this time it almost felt like three separate characters: Tate, Present-Day Miles, and Past Miles. Miles' past wasn't as a much of a surprise as in some of Hoover's other novels, where the characters have deep, hurtful pasts, but the full-circle moments at the end still result in a great story. Tate and Miles' love story reminds me of the relationships that we all know are bad ideas, but can't make ourselves stop, no matter how wrong it is. Maybe it gives hope for these moments of "ugly love" that happen in real life, that somehow, just maybe, it will all work out and have the happy ending that we all dream about having or read about in books just like this one.

A modern day friends with benefits story, that is complicated where characters have previous experiences of trauma that keeps them guarded in receiving the love they deserve.
It was a mix of love and lust, trauma and healing, forgiveness and strengths.
I really love the dual narrative style writing, as it allows you to try and understand both sides of a story and reasonings why characters are the way they are.
At times there were times I was emotional during this read, and honestly felt like my heart broke for them.
While some parts were predictable, it is not a lighthearted love story, it is messy, painful and at times uncomfortable but I think this is something Colleen writes well showing the real sides of love.
Quote from book
“ love isn’t always pretty, sometimes you spend all your time hoping it will eventually be something different. Something better. Then before you know it, you’re back to square one, and you lost your heart somewhere along the way”
Pg 165 - where an elder man is explaining what love means to him and the love he will always have for someone he knew he could never be with
a bit disappointing. don’t like miles like the rest of the internet seems to do.
Literally ES WAR SO LANGWEILIG. Warum wird das so gehyped?
I loved this book. I finished it in a day and a half. I would definitely recommend.
I've read better fan fiction on Wattpad written by a 13-year-old.
You know, it's really not about the story with Colleen Hoover. It's about the way she tells the story. And wow - I don't think she's told one this well since Hopeless.
I have to say that while Hoover writes some long-suffering women, Tate was not so much one of those. She was much more self-possessed than Sydney in Maybe Someday. A strong, older version of Sky in Hopeless. I liked that.
I loved that scene between Miles and Rachel. I also loved the way Hoover showed us the stark contrast between teenagers and young adults, the difference a few years can make.
Amazing. I just love Colleen Hoover.
