Micah has an ordered life, but when a few small incidents happen, he needs to rethink how he has ordered his world. A typical Anne Tyler novel where not much happens but the character has a small epiphany and realizes with a small change he make his life better.
5.5/10
This was a short book and I'm not sure if that made it better or worse. Anne Tyler knows how to write exceedingly realistic characters but so little happens that the book felt a bit pointless. But then I'm not sure what else I was hoping to happen with this character and his story.

What a superb storyteller Anne Tyler is. One of those stories where I couldn’t figure out why, but I just couldn’t put this one down - read it in one evening.

“I mean, how could you have forgotten it? How could you have forgotten that bike the whole afternoon? Wouldn’t it have been on your mind every single minute, something you wanted for so long? But no, by then you were used to it. Now that it was yours you were noticing things wrong with it, like squeaky brakes or a scratch in the paint, or, I don’t know, and it didn’t matter anymore.”
“It wasn’t that it didn’t matter” Micah told her.
“Well,” Lorna said steadily, “I am the bicycle you lost in the park the summer you turned twelve.”
He blinked ....p162
Anne Tyler does it again; the perfect portrait of a middle aged man lost in the minutiae of his life. To paraphrase a friend @bookwormsalisburyuk, because i think that she summed it up perfectly (in fact you should read her review, it is fabulous) - there are some people who can’t help but get in their own way and Micah Mortimer is the epitome of this.
As she does so well, Anne Tyler slowly lets Micah get under your skin, his relationships and interactions gradually reveal the frustrating man that he is.
Tyler’s observations, as always are on point and oh so beautifully written.
A 4.5 ⭐️ for me, and that’s only because I have read some stellar 5⭐️s lately..... #annetyler #redheadbythesideoftheroad

This was subtle, full of beautiful observations and felt really invested in the story, in spite of the fact that not much seems to happen. The disfunctionality of the protagonist becomes quickly apparent almost as quickly as you end up warmly rooting for him. Thoroughly enjoyable and a nice quick read.
This was my first Anne Tyler book and I had no idea what to expect - but I really enjoyed it. I actually thought it could be a little bit longer - I was looking forward to seeing the story develop more. The character development in the book was very good - especially for the length of it.
3.5 stars. This was a quick read and I am not normally fond of these kind of books. I need action and adventure I guess, but it was good. It is about Micah Mortimer and his everyday life. He is awkward with people and has a set routine every day, but what happens when you see how other people see you and maybe you need to change. Open your eyes to what is around you.
Quiet little book that follows a man in his forties who the world sort of looks over as a friendly personal computer help technician. The author breathes life into the main character and helps make his mundane life seem personally meaningful.
