I really enjoyed this story, from the main couple’s story line to even the side characters (especially Lincoln). It’s cliche for Barrett’s kind of character going from the type F boy to falling head over heels for a girl and it never disappoints, especially the grovelling. I like how Alison didn’t bend for Barrett like the other girls, especially after their first kiss. She didn’t want to be treated like that. I really like how Barrett wants to respect Huxley as well
You can see it that Barrett had huge reservations about being mayor and it was clear he wasn’t feeling it and you can sense how high the walls Alison had put up after her past but I loved how they both made each other feel worthy, it’s usually reading about the girl’s character learning to feel worthy but I love how it was both characters.
I’m excited to read Lincoln’s story! He intrigued me a lot during this book. And I’m hoping we see a bit more of him and Huxley’s relationship as well.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Things I liked:
- When Barrett helped her with her boss
- “He smiles and I feel my knees go weak”
- “I want a chance to win you over,” ……. “Will you let me try?”
- When he ordered food at the place she works and requested she deliver it
- I love how he goes to his sister for advice because he’s feeling guilty
- “She’s the only person that makes me smile.”
- When Barrett defends her over Graham
- “A smile curls the side of his face. “You’re crazy beautiful.”
- “He wants me. And Hux.”
- Grapes +table scene. HOT
- “A vision of me sitting at a table with Hux going over science problems and history questions flashes through my brain. ”
- Barrett and Huxley’s talk
- “you and me, is the right thing. And if that makes me lose the election, then it does”
- “Then let’s be together. You and me. Fuck them.” His smile is contagious and I give in. “Okay. You and me.”
- “my heart stilled in my chest that this little boy would think of me as family.”
- When Huxley hugged Barrett because of the baseball season tickets
- When Barrett exposed Nolan for everything (When Mr Landry punched Nolan I gasped)
- “I met this girl and she stole just about every part of me, actually. My mind. My heart too.”
- “The peace and love in this room is such a different feeling than I’ve ever felt, even with my own family. ”

If my future kid is not as great as Huxley I'm going to return him ( kidding....not really). He was 10 and was so loving and protective of his Momma that I don't think she actually needed any other man in her life.
Barrett was so adorable. He was kind of ass in the start but he came around pretty quickly. I would say he was more into her than she was into him. Alison was wary about their relationship due to her past and she also had to look out for her son. But I liked how she supported him and encouraged him to believe in himself. To stand up for what he thinks is right.
I really just love political romance. All the election campaigning going on. So I was probably going to enjoy this anyway. Still it was a great read.

2.5 - too white for me. absolutely ZERO diversity and idk why I'm surprised and this was honestly boring and predictable. i expected cute moments with the son but it all just fell flat
I love the Landry's!! I actually started this series with Lincoln's book, Swing, and never had a chance to go back and read Barrett's story until now. Sure that gave me a few spoilers since the books in this series are interconnected stand alones, but it didn't make the experience any less entertaining and emotional.
I enjoyed finally getting to know Barrett, Alison, and Huxley better and seeing how their story began. I especially loved how strong and independent Alison was after the events in her past forced her to be more self reliant. She doesn't just fall into Barrett's arms and want to be saved or taken care of. She's very clear that she is more than capable of doing that herself and thanks to her past, she keeps her heart very guarded. This of course creates quite the push and pull since Barrett is used to getting his way, but I loved that he never wavered or gave up. He has quite the reputation with the ladies, but once he made a connection with Alison, none of that mattered any more because he only had eyes for her. And what a connection it was!! I don't think ANYONE will ever look at grapes the same way again!!
Watching Barrett grow and really become the man that he's always been inside was inspiring. It takes a lot of courage and heart to stay true to yourself and I respected how Barrett laid it all on the line and let the chips fall where they may. Though the book wasn't heavy on politics, it did play a crucial role in the plot and I enjoyed watching Barrett's run for Governor play out. Seeing all the Landry siblings introduced for the first time, has me itching to do a re-read so I can fall in love with them all over again. If you haven't started this series yet, what are you waiting for?!

I've typically stayed away from political romance books simply due to the fact that the ones I've read, I didn't exactly enjoy. It was too heavy on the politics and a big portion of the story which I didn't enjoy. HOWEVER, this one wasn't too heavy on the politics which made me happy. I've been hesitant to start this series simply because this first one follows Barrett, the oldest Landry who is the Mayor.
I'm so happy I ended up enjoying this one and I'm so excited to continue buddy reading/binging this series with one of my besties!
NOW, GIVE ME LINCOLN!

3.5 stars. I'm happy to say that the writing is marginally better in the newest series, though pronouns seem to be her wrecking ball. If Locke uses "that" instead of "who" once, she does it a thousand times. I know, because every single one made my eyes twitch. Also, "I" and "me" ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE. Ugh.
But I like this introduction to the Landry family (even though I already read Sienna's story and still like her best). I'm more excited to read about the non-politician brothers.
