Between other works by the same author, this felt like a tougher read even though it is way smaller. Maybe due to its heavy dependency to the doctor’s gaze. In this sense the book successfully employed a sterile vision such as a lab should be. And maybe it was due to the translation, but at several points the narrative felt flat.

This novella is actually quite entertaining and straight-up funny at times. However, I kept wincing at the smugness of Bulgakov and his upper-middle-class antics. This is a biased satire - like all satire, really - but here it feels a bit off, since all the lower-class characters are depicted as mindless, annoying, or unable to think for themselves, while the upper class is always clever, precise, and never foolish (except when believing they can turn the common man into an apt member of society…). The prose is great, and the narrative dynamics are compelling and keep the story fresh. I just can't get on board with Bulgakov's conservative and vaguely reactionary beliefs - they leave a sour taste in my mouth. 7/10
زمین گذاشتن این کتاب برامسخت بود، یه جوری که انگار همه ماجراها بغل گوشم اتفاق می افتاد. می تونستم صداشون روهمبشنوم، مثلا صدای پای سگ.
