A joy to read. Laugh out loud funny in parts. An absurdist tale delivered in such a matter of fact way, you happily accept it without question.
A renowned Moscow professor transplants a human pituitary gland and testes to a stray street dog with the aim of furthering his research into human rejuvenation. After a successful transplant, the dog takes on an increasingly human form - beginning with expressing seemingly every profanity he’s ever heard on the streets of Moscow. Poligraph Poligraphovich, as the dog renames himself, proves to be a totally unreconstituted individual who wreaks untold havoc on the Professor’s life and that of the whole household. Ultimately, the Professor feels the only way out is to reverse the transplant & return the dog to its original state.
Set in the immediate aftermath of the Russian Revolution, the book can be read as a satire of the revolution. One in which no one comes off well.
In any reading, my sympathies are entirely with the dog.
I’ve tried several times to read The Master & Margarita & failed. The Heart of a Dog, however, pretty much reads itself.

I didn't read the back of this before I began reading which is something I would both recommend and strictly advise against depending on your personal outcome. Big points for originality and making political observations in an engaging way.
