If Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis made love in Russia.
The book can not help but come off as a pastiche when you recognize the obvious influences it wears but still the Russian charm and the very peculiar setting does give the book a unique flavor of the similar dish. My head hurts still, dozing off now.

Very whimsical soon became very scary. I should not have read this the night before surgery.
I really enjoyed the multiple perspectives - not sure if this occurs specifically in the translation I was reading.

Heart of A Dog is unique in its ability to make fun of every single one of its characters, settings, and plot points. A true satire and a perfect parable of class relations — and animal/human relations — at a particular moment in socioeconomic history. I loved this book. I devoured Master & Margarita and needed more deeply Russian, semi-folk loric, soviet quasi-magical realism. Heart of a Dog did not disappoint. Not as masterful as M&M, but excellent in its own.
