Rooted in Russian history that I am uninformed of, this book has a fascinating yet horrifying theme. A disfigured and battered dog walks the streets until a scientist finds him and takes him in. The horror of the tale is that the scientist performs experimental surgery to turn the dog into a man. He gains his own feelings, morals, and place in society, turning to alcoholism, power trips, and stubbornness. Reading this makes me want to learn about the historical background of russia at the time this was written.

This was a really enjoyable quick read! I’m still trying to decode the political implications of it, to an extent, but otherwise it was a really fun read. It was suspenseful too, more so than I expected, and the ending was such a relief.

Also, there’s a wonderful moment where one of my favourite moments in The Master and Margarita is mentioned! I guess the imagery was lingering in Bulgakov’s mind for quite a while.

Initially I didn't really know what to make of this. It is from a different time, sure, though some of the humor survives. It explores what forced education and elevation does, and the way that class and power is misused. The intellectual and academic want to bring the suffering up to their level, but they are irresponsible with their creation and let others appeal to his baser instincts. I worry this is out of touch but interesting as a metaphor.
