This book was NOT GOOD. I started off quite interested in the world building etc but over time got less and less interested. This read like some bloke’s 80s vanity project to prove his knowledge and also had major incel vibes, this man does NOT know how to write women. Way too much game description and a real missed opportunity to sort of discuss the morality of wealth hoarding when you’ve already built a world so bad that everyone has to escape online. It could have been an interesting dystopia. Also YUCK why on earth did they have to include the sex doll detail and the hair removal detail???

It’s 2044 where most people nowadays spend their time in the OASIS, a virtual reality world, to escape the world’s problems like the energy crises and the shortage of food crisis. The OASIS isn’t just a game. It can actually replace the real world. For example there are many businesses in the OASIS since renting a space in the real world is much more expensive than inside the OASIS. Halliday the owner of the OASIS, a billionaire, dies and leaves his net worth including the OASIS as a prize for solving a puzzle inside the OASIS. The book tells the story of Wade Watts, an 18 year old trying to solve the puzzle to win the prize. The puzzle or the game isn’t easy and many players from all over the world are competing to win.

There was an excessive amount of references to the 1980s pop culture since the puzzle involves knowing all about that stuff. I honestly didn’t get 90% of the references. This book should be a delight for anyone obsessed with video games, movies from the 1980s. The book takes you through an adventures of how these players strive to finish the game first.
