I enjoy this series! And love Skippy and Tess. This novel was a good *gasp* ending in the Meg and Simon story. While that makes me sad I hope we see them again.

Look. This series is hella problematic, but it has some redeeming characteristics.

I received an e-ARC copy of Etched in the Bone from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the conclusion to the Lakeside Arc of The Others series. I was sad to see them go but I was really happy to move on

It’s the aftermath of the Elder’s culling of the human herds. There are less humans and the Cleo-Roman Alliance is no more. Strict rules have been put in place regarding travel and food seems to be a constant worry. For Lakeside, most of the city survived and it is one of the largest remaining human governed cities in Thaisa. There is a new Mayor and Police commissioner who want to work with the Courtyard to bring peace. However the Lakeside Courtyard is going through its own changes. Under Simon’s leadership it has become a training ground for Others. It is also where the human pack resides and Monty’s brother has arrived bringing trouble with him.

This book is all about after. It’s about recovery and rebuilding. Meg and Simon and the rest of the courtyard end up making decisions that affect everywhere else. They are helping to reestablish Bennet again and they work with both the Terre Indigene and the Inuit. The courtyard also has two invisible visitors, Elders, who are there to observe the humans and how to tell of they are going to be trouble.

The human pack has become important. They live in Terre Indigene owned buildings and work for them. Monty’s brother, Jimmy arrives in Lakeside with expectations of how he wants things to go and ignites trouble right off the bat. Most of the book was him creating trouble and everyone else dealing with it. Mostly because the Elders want to observe Jimmy and see why he is so bad.

There were a bunch of new human characters in this book. Serria was a wimp. I didn’t like Jimmy, for obvious reasons, but I was a little bit tired of Monty. He’s a good guy but he is still surprised by strictness of the Others and I got tired of his excuses. Twylia, Monty’s mom, was my favorite of the new characters. She was awesome. There really are a lot of human characters and I will admit I was more interested in the Others. Although I really wanted to see Burke take Jimmy down as many pegs as possible.

I missed some of the characters that we had spent time with in the other books. The Elementals were only peripherally in the book. I missed Hope and Jackson. I really wanted to see how they came through and what was going on with their part of Thasia. I also wanted to spend more time in Bennett. Barb is funny and Jana is interesting and the Others there along with Jesse Walker, Tobias and Rachel Wolfgard .

I was happy with Meg and Simon’s relationship and the note it finished on. He is not human and she doesn’t want human. I think they are cute and I hope that we get mentions of them in the next book. I was also really happy with Sam and Skippy.

I’m looking forward to the next arc. I hope it is full of new people and places and few old friends.

2022 Reread:
I'm reminded about how much I disliked Jimmy. He colors this whole book which is why I think this is only the second time I've read it.

One of the best urban fantasy/supernatural series ended with "Etched in Bone". The story of Meg and the Others concludes with this book, which is big and covers almost everyone who live in the Lakeside Courtyard.

The Elders roam Thasia after the events of the previous book and Simon's Courtyard becomes the center of the events which can determine the fate of all humans. I adored every moment he and Meg shared, which are much more than the previous books. As also the little family they have made with Sam and Skippy.

The human pack also has its iwn story to say. From Monty and the police force to the children and the elderly Twylla Montgomery who also lives in the Courtyard. There were also many funny episodes between chapters which gave a lighter tone to the story. Seeing the Others trying to find out more about human behavior is always very funny.

The ending of this series was very satisfying. Though I wouldn't mind more of Meg's and Simon's story to be told, I recently discovered that Anne Bishop will write another series based on the Others universe. But still, I want to learn about Jana the police officer and the male Wolfgard who is her boss! That would make an amazing couple!

Etched in Bone is the fifth book in the Others series and I just loved getting to back into this great world. Ahhhhhh this book was just so good and so easy to get lost in. I just didn’t want this story to end and I just couldn’t get enough of Simon and Meg. I just love them so much and this author just has a way of bringing them to life. I just was sad to turn the last page. I hope the author will revisit these characters because I don’t want this to be the last time I see these amazing characters.

This was the most agonizing series I have ever struggled through. I don't know how it ended up in the paranormal romance pile. Glad it's finally over.

4 stars. This is the final book in Meg and Simon’s story and I thought it wrapped up really well. I love this series and it has come a long way from where it started. I think I hated Simon in the beginning which seems weird to say now. He and Meg both go through some fantastic and subtle character development. And we finally get their relationship established and that entire scene at the end was the cutest thing ever. I just love them both so much.

There was a lot of action and surprises in this one and it was a really fun ride. I’m glad that Bishop has decided to continue on in this world even though we will no longer be following Simon and Meg, I’m excited to meet the new characters and see where she takes things from here.
