2.5 stars.

A very middle of the road read for me. Definitely got some of the spooky energy that it wanted to give off. Particularly when Lene was inspecting the doll house and all of the dolls were facing away from her. But even towards the end of the story when we were reaching some point of climax, the stakes did not feel completely high enough. Although, considering the time period that this short story was written and released, I can see how it could have been considered to be quite scary and uncanny. All that said, I found the writing style quite easy to get along with, which I always appreciate when reading older books, and for the most part, I was entertained. A good read. :)

It was VERY slow for a short story. I did very much enjoy the ending though!

It had its creepy moments, especially toward the end, but overall I was disappointed by the lack of explanation/revelation and there were parts where I really had to force myself to focus on the writing and not drift off.

This short horror story was just the right amount of spooky that I needed. Even though it is such a short tale, it really was atmospheric and gave me The Haunting of Hill House vibes. If you want a quick little scare that will leave you a bit uneasy, I recommend.

Not a massive fan of this book however seeing as it’s very short it’s definitely worth reading.

If it wasn’t for the last 10 pages I’d have given this book a 2* rating. The ending really saved this book.

There is better work by Aickman, but wow, is his writing good. It is so atmospheric. Easy and fun - give it a go.

My first taste of Aickman. I did struggle with some of the language at times but I enjoyed this a lot. Vague in all the right places, an air of threat built through the natural landscape, and a palpable feeling of injustice for the protagonist.
