The first book I DNF. I just couldn't get into. I LOVED the writing style, it just wasn't for me.

This book is like a punch in the gut relatable. This is a beautifully written book about heartache, grief and the unimaginable unbearable pain it brings. As adults most of us have experienced this type of pain but seeing it through the eyes of the main character brings that pain we’ve buried bubbling back to the surface. *Before reading this book please check the trigger warnings.

Waaaay too much self-pity. Like a ridiculously self-indulgent amount of pity. Oh, so you’re dating this terrible guy and every time he does something selfish it’s YOUR fault? No thanks.

The small amount of character growth toward the end did not balance out the amount of floundering throughout the book.

I have an unpopular opinion with this one, but I just wanna say that I've been in a relationship for 6 years and am soon to be getting married so I am so far away from being able to relate to Adelaide's toxic unrequited love 'situationship' in this book. It's also nitpicky but I hate the word situationship and that the author used it in this book. I really just don't understand what was keeping Adelaide with him for so long other than just flat out desperation because Rory is such a dick.

There are some pretty good quotes and a few things I could relate to Adelaide on but honestly by the end of the book I was feeling pure frustration. There's a death of another character and the way it affected Adelaide and Rory, separately and their relationship, was where it went downhill for me. I knew this wasn't going to be a romance going into it but I hate that the death of another woman is essentially the catalyst for a lot of the toxicity that follows. There's just plenty of men that treat women the way Rory treated Adelaide without having a death to blame. Let's call these trash men out without giving them a tragic backstory.

Last thing I'll say is I don't like the juxtaposition of being told these characters are into classic films and books and then throwing in modern phrases/pop culture references. I'm lacking a better way to explain it other than it felt like the author was going for two different aesthetics and couldn't choose one.

I don't not recommend this, plenty of people love it but it wasn't for me.
