“Most shark attacks occur
ten feet from the shore

But now the ocean is in the road” (50)

Inspired by our necessary but tenuous and (sometimes) terrifying connection to the water, this vivid collection of poetry meditates on the “push and pull” of that fraught relationship.

Everyday anxieties mesh with overarching concerns of safety, with the onslaught and aftermath of Hurricane Sandy on the Jersey Shore looming ever in the background. Prose on the very real damage caused by the storm to Findura’s family are interspersed with the poetry, reminding readers in a prescient way that the mental and physical damage cannot be so easily disentangled from each other. Some storms you survive and other storms survive in you.

Definitely recommend! As a New Jersey local and friend of Findura, I found this collection to speak to my own memories of Hurricane Sandy. This collection serves as a testament to a tumultuous time in our state’s history and serves as a record of the lasting anxiety such a disaster left on our lives.
