I saw this as an ARC and was curious. I borrowed an e-copy from the library. Overall I liked this graphic novel. The art style is what drew me in. I wasn’t sure at first because there’s a lot of world building, Magic has to be explained, etc. Kibuishi does a good job of explaining the magic and I liked the develop of the two main characters’ relationship. I’m interested in the second book.

This is lower-to-middle grade reading (it was recommended to me by a 3rd grader), but young teens would also enjoy it. There's a hint of romance, interesting world building, and a great set up for book 2.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. Tabby's father dies of mysterious means and she is left with suspicions of what has happened. She is an outcast thanks to her father's research work and spends a lot of her time alone. Eventually she stumbles upon a young man who has stepped out of a whole other place, obviously not of Earth. After being pulled into a portal, she finds a whole other world. Can she get home? Is she safe? Will Phillip, her new found friend be able to help her?
The story is really thought out and the graphics do a wonderful job of supporting the plot. Readers are treated to some wonderful elements such as portal travel, other worlds, elemental magic and more. Kibuishi does a wonderful job of world building, especially in so few pages. The feel reminds me so much of when I read A Wrinkle in Time as a teenager and has similar elements. I really enjoyed the creation myth behind the Geist and how it plays into the world. Overall a real solid read and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Very beautiful, colorful and interesting world. The characters are very likeable and I think it did a great job with the building from the very first volume. I will definitely follow this series.
