There's a lot to love about Superman for All Seasons. The interactions between Superman, Ma & Pa Kent and Lana Lang damn near brought a tear to my eye. I loved the meditative pace and the psychological insight into Superman you get by viewing him from four different perspectives. The art had a wonderful, distinctive style that evoked Norman Rockwell's Americana without fully slipping into his nostalgia. And there's a panel on page 80 that is one of the most beautiful evocations of movement I've ever seen in a comic.
But there's also some flaws. The character design of Clark/Superman is just....off. He looks puffy; he has a tiny face on a huge head. The rest of the character design is lovely, but Supes sticks out like a sore thumb. The "action" part of the book where Superman tangles with Lex Luthor is easily the weakest. We get great insight into Superman, Lana Lang, the Kents and, to a lesser extent, Lois Lane, but we never get a sense of how Luthor works. He gets a lot of pages, but he never quite comes into focus. Lex's plot also doesn't make a ton of sense and it feels shoved in just to give external conflict on top of Superman's internal conflict. The book would have been fine with just the latter.
Still, it's a lovely lovely book.

Some of the art here is awe-inspiring and incredibly moving. Some of it makes the characters look like deformed claymation. You win some, you lose some. Still, the writing was very good and that very last narration in the fourth volume did actually pull at my heartstrings.

I love the voice-over aspect of each season. The artwork is phenomenal. A great representation of the Man of Steel.

james really wanted me to read this one and it was lovely! beautiful art. loved the way the story was split up, with different narrators for different seasons. hated the way they drew lex luthor. lois lane was the embodiment of sexy. superman was a big ole teddy bear.
