It’s about as pitch perfect an early career Superman story could be, focusing almost entirely on him as a man and his worries and internal fears. It works incredibly well as a tonal statement piece, but is entirely beholden to the osmosis of canon for its larger impact (though this could easily be an instance of me not realizing just how much a touchstone this is because it was so heavily borrowed). I think I like All-Star Superman and the new movie more, but this was great, and the most engrossing Smallville (and most interesting looking Metropolis) has ever been for me. A deserved classic.

Was expecting this to be forgettable but it’s kind of like the other, sentimental half to Byrne’s Man of Steel. Teared up a bit. Maybe it really is better for Pa Kent to be alive.

While it took me a few pages to get used to Clark’s character design, this chubby, baby-faced Superman, I can’t say I didn’t appreciate the art beyond that. The attention to detail in Clark’s room, the gorgeous landscapes, the use of colour, and how the art complements the story are all impressive.

Superman for All Seasons tells a story spread across the seasons, each narrated by a different character. This structure reveals the various facets of Clark Kent: teenage boy, reporter, Superman, and friend. There’s something very nostalgic about how the art and storytelling work together so seamlessly. I might pick up another comic by these artists to see if they can recreate that same magic.

Superman has never been one of those superheroes I found particularly fascinating, but I enjoyed how he was portrayed here, with more emphasis on his human side rather than just the heroic. Maybe it’s also because Superman feels like the lighter counterpart to Batman, like yin and yang.
