I've read both of Flynn's books, and I really enjoy her knack for damaged protagonists. Her books are dark & twisted, but thankfully don't employ the usual serial killer or sexual predator cliches.

I haven't read "Sharp Objects" yet, but, I think THIS is the book that needs to be made into a movie!

I still cannot believe that I just read a book about an adult coming to terms with a horrendous murder and instead of going to the police she decides to investigate putting herself in serious danger. This is more or less the premise but honestly it's so much more than that.

I thought I was sooooo clever but Flynn was always one step ahead and that's what makes this book a treasure. There are enough red herrings for me to chase and everything fits together like one of those satisfying videos. And don't get me started on the characters. Libby is life even though she constantly visualizes taking her own life. (I know that pun was in bad taste.) All of the voices were distinct and convincing. I experienced a feeling of simultaneously finding everyone despicable while empathizing severely. I could not put this book down until I got to the bottom of things because it was that compelling. I think at this point I'm just spewing nonsense since otherwise I'd spoil the whole book.

Just read the book if you like true crime and a bitter/harden/snarky woman. Shit, this makes Dark Places seem like the numerous books about jaded detectives and the crime they never solved years ago. Trust me, it's a refreshing take on the genre that rings truly unique.
