Enjoyable, as all Anne Tyler books are. Follows the trials and tribulations of a slightly flighty young man working for a company called Rent-A-Back.

This took awhile to grow on me, but I loved the ending.

Always a fan of Anne Tyler, but this wasn't my favorite by her.

Barnaby is a lovable mess, and Anne Tyler does an excellent job of making us root for him even if we're not sure we should be. The black sheep of his family who has a tendency to commit bizarre—but fairly harmless—crimes, Barnaby has a job he loves and is good at, a more or less functional relationship with his daughter, and an apartment. But can never live up to what his family wants him to be. Barnaby's true talents lie in his empathy, his awareness of everyday life and mortality, and his desire to just be. Tyler's portrait of Barnaby is sometimes unclear and ambiguous and not all our questions are answered, but that seems fine here, in "A Patchwork Planet," where we see that lives come with many paths and possibilities.

"A Patchwork Planet" by Anne Tyler was a fun and sweet read, but not without depth. And having an ending I wasn't expecting with this sort of book really sealed it for me. I would recommend it.

Not my favorite by Tyler, but still better than a lot of things out there.
