A different Shardlake mystery as it familiar hunchback lawyer gets caught up in the events of the 1549 Jett's Rebellion. In this story the mystery takes a bit of a backseat to the events that are happening around the main characters and, while undoubtedly exciting and compelling to read, gives the story a very different feel to the previous books, such as Lamentation. However, as a way to learn about the history of these events, there can be no better. Sansom again does a fantastic job of potraying the atmosphere and the feelings of people living through this turbulent time, and the level of research may be well beyond any of the other books in the series.
