I enjoyed a lot of aspects of this book, unfortunately the big twist was pretty obvious to me from the start, so it didn't really have the intended effect. It follows Jacob, a washed up writer who had one somewhat successful book, and now finds himself teaching at a lackluster MFA program. I enjoyed that his character was believable and just the right amount of unlikeable due to his arrogance. He was a believable writer-type to me. Jacob meets with one of his very confident students, Evan, who shares with him his fool-proof, guaranteed best-seller of a plot. (At this point it isn't yet revealed to the reader.) Jacob doubts Evan's ability to successfully craft this novel, and puts it out of his mind when Evan disappears from the program. Years pass, and Jacob tries to find it the novel was ever written, and instead ends up finding out Evan died only a few years after their encounter. After convincing himself that it is his writerly duty to bring the idea to life, Jacob steals Evan's story and writes it. As predicted, it is a smash hit, propelling Jacob to fame. At the height of his success, he receives an anonymous email from someone who seems to know his secret- telling him he is a theif. His guily and feat of being exposed lead him to dig into Evan's past. Meanwhile, he meets, falls in love with, and marries a fan who helped to get him onto a radio show. <Spoiler> I was immediately and rightfully convinced that her goal was to expose Jacob, it was just more of a long game than I initially expected. As Jacob visits Evan's past haunts, he begins to realize that the story he has taken isn't just an outstanding fiction idea from Evan, but he has in fact
stolen the true story of Evan's family. The story is actually based on Evan's sister Anna, who was forced to have a child she did not want, grew to resent her, and ultimately murdered her and took her place at university. Anna is determined to silence Jacob, and as Jacob finds out the reality of the story he is driven to tell it. In a final and unsurprising twist to me, we find out that Jacob is actually married to Anna. She murders him to silence him and keep her secret
. Overall, this book is well written and interesting, but I found it a bit predictable which took away from the wow factor.

As others have said, the plot is predictable. I figured out the mystery about halfway through. This author hated all her characters. Also, she especially hates the South. If you hate a region, don't send your characters to it. Her depiction was what she'd read in Northern newspapers and online about the South. Terrible. Skip this one.

For a book about an entirely unique plot, this was one of the most predictable books I’ve read
mysterious

Feels like a fun mixture
The Plotters
,
Yellowface
, and
Gone Girl
. It was fun. I truly enjoyed
villain main characters
, that ends really badly for them. Looking forward to the sequel.
