This was an absolutely great book. Initially I was a little hesitant because there seemed to be a lot of characters and a few storyline happening, but the author does a great job of developing all characters and tieing everything together. She also does a good job of including clues ajd foreshadowing throughout the novel, and then actually referring to them again which SO many thrillers do not.

The ending was incredible, I was on the edge of my seat until the very last page. This is a must read for mystery fans!

Katie Tallo has a very unique style of writing that I don’t often see/read, in addition to writing in what I believe is third person present tense according to other reviewers. This gives the book a movie-like feel throughout the novel as we follow Augusta (Gus) in her investigation. Dark August definitely started out slow for about the first third of the book and, like other reviewers, I stopped and started often. However, I did end up enjoying the overall mystery and the various twists and turns. The author has a talent for weaving an intricate story with various layers that are slowly uncovered. The one problem I had is that there were too many scenes where she would sit down with someone and then it would be like “now let me tell you what happened on that day…” and for the entire chapter it was the one person speaking. I think this was used a little too much and slowed down the pace of the novel. Overall, I would recommend Dark August as long as you are aware of the slow start, and I enjoyed putting together the puzzle pieces of this suspenseful mystery as it was a wonderful debut.

Thank you so much to Harper Perennial for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review! Release date 6/30/2020

This debut novel was quite the ride! Loved that it is set in Ontario, Canada. I could picture some of the scenes which was a lot of fun.
The start was a slow burn, but enough happens to keep you turning the pages. The I couldn't put it down moment was of course at 2 am, which also coincided with being totally scared.. but... that's a testament to how well it was written. And it most definitely didn't stop me from staying up to the wee hours to finish it!

Lot’s of potential. Looking forward to seeing how she grows as an author.

As a reader, once I really begin to figure it out, it feels like it starts to drag. I do love that she essentially trusts the reader to follow along and “get it.”

Amazing debut thriller. Definitely one deeply disturbed character which threw me off. Really enjoyed it overall
