Honestly I just got bogged down in this book by the three books in one type scenario. You had the before/present and then after and I felt like it was too much to keep up with. I got the point but felt like the ending just wasn't worth all the effort. I thought there would be some huge twist because I had figured out one of the twists so I thought there would be something bigger and then there wasn't. Ending just fell flat for me andddd I felt like with the book being sooo intricate that the ending should have been also. It wasn't, for me.

Pros about this book: The writing is fantastic, I enjoy how this author weaves a story in the sense that it's not what you'd expect unless you've read some of her other books. If this is the first book you've read of this author you may enjoy it more than I did. She has a way of telling a story and catching  you off guard. This is an author I'll always check out, I enjoyed Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown SO much so all is not lost. I didn't hate this book at all, I read it in just over a day, I just wasn't crazy about it and felt like it was overwhelming with no tied up ending.

I had about half of the ending figured out, especially the "big reveal". So it was just meh on that front, but it was still an enjoyable book. The characters weren't very likable even the main MC, she was just soo clueless! I did like the atmosphere and that stuff. I would have liked to get to know other characters besides Amelie better, we don't get much about anyone else.

Thank you to B.A. Paris and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of The Prisoner for me to read and review. Wow! B.A. Paris did it again! What an awesome, captivating, addictive read! I was immediately hooked with the way the story jumped right into the thick of the action and then gave us little bits of background and depth through the multiple timelines portrayed in part 1. I loved the way Paris wrote the main character with such description and depth. It allowed me to really feel connected to her and sympathize with her situation. And what a plot! The twists and turns were wild enough to give me whiplash and I didn't know who could be trusted. It took me on a wild ride of emotions, uncertainty, and fear and left me aching for a sequel.  Definitely a must-read!

The Prisoner by B.A. Paris had my attention from the first page.  The book opens with a first-hand account of a woman, Amelie, being abducted and I was immediately intrigued with the way she was processing the information.  I felt as lost and confused as she did, wondering how she ended up in this situation.  As she started focusing on how to survive, I was hooked.

As the story progresses, the reader sees two timelines and starts to understand Amelie’s life before the abduction.  I loved the way the way it all came together, as the reader starts to understand the motivation behind her captors.  I was not expecting it to unfold the way it did.

The first 70% of the book is tense and fast-paced, with a mystery I couldn’t put down.  The last 30% slowed a bit and was focused on closing out any loose ends in the story.  I really loved the premise and the overall plot but did wish the tension hadn’t dropped off towards the end.

Overall, this is a solid thriller and one I would recommend to those looking for a page-turner.  I’ve read all of the author’s novels and this is in the top 2 for me, along with The Dilemma.  They both place characters in seemingly impossible situations, where they make in-the-moment decisions that they are forced to reckon with longer-term.  If that sounds interesting to you – give this a try!

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my review.  I was really looking forward to reading the latest from this author and appreciated the chance to preview it.  It’s available on November 1, 2022 and you can pre-order today.
