"As a body everyone is single, as a soul never." - Hermann Hesse

I hate comparing novels but since Come Anima Mai isn't as famous as it should be, a comparison could give you an idea of what a marvelous novel this is.
This book combines the same intensity of feelings and lyrical prose of Aciman's Call Me By Your Name, with the atmosphere and some of the themes of Forster's Maurice. However, in its +700 pages, Rossana Soldano wrote some mind-blowing plot twists that I could have never seen coming and that left me pacing around my room in complete shock FOR HOURS.
Come Anima Mai may share some similarities with those books but it's much more than the sum of them.

So, what is this book really about?
Set around Europe in the 30s/40s, Come Anima Mai tells the story of two young men, Lewis and Will, and how they bravely loved eachother at a time when anonymous sexual encounters between men were easier and less dangerous than falling in love, when blood and titles were prisons impossible to escape and when Europe was becoming the stage for one of humanity's darkest plays.

I always say I don't read romance but let's admit that what I mean by that is that I abhor straight romance but I can't resist a well written queer romance, especially if it's lyrical and historical. Come Anima Mai is both and its historical elements are my favourite thing about it, the way it takes the history we all know and wraps it around itself, making it something familiar and yet different, something that feels incredibly personal and hurts deeply.

Sadly this book can only be found in Italian, which is a crime in itself. So if you can read Italian please go and read it now, you won't regret it. If you can't, I hope one day it will be translated into English so that it can receive the amount of love it really deserves.

Here's a little quote I translated for you because the fact that this story can't reach every single one of you makes me sad:

"We're like leaves tied to the same branch: we brush against eachother in the slight breeze and yearn for the storm, to die or to live, in any case free."

A very well written book, the sequences are introspective and the descriptions are written like poems. I didn't like the slow pace and it's too long in my opinion, but it's not bad if you like that kind of book.
