Honestly, the book had been sitting on my shelf for a while because I had low expectations for its story (I'm not a big fan of western books), but once I read it, I must admit that it was surprisingly quite good and interesting.

However, the writing style was at times confusing, and I found myself having to read the same dialogues more than once because I was confused about who was speaking. I feel like this slowed down the rythm and enthusiasm that had built up until those moments.

Still, its cliffhanger ending left me with an itch to read volume II, so extra points for that.

I was gonna give this book five stars, because it really is absolutely amazing, and the bromance between Winnetou and Old Shatterhand is the religion I subscribe to.
However, by the time it came around to Old Shatterhand (spoiler) not wanting to marry Nscho-Tschi mainly because she's a Native girl, there generally were some more racist comments.
I am of course aware that Karl May for his day and age was incredibly progressive by just writing the Native Americans to be the good guys generally and that he was the opposite of a racist, what he said was not considered racist, just the norm.
Nevertheless we are thankfully moving forward in society and allthough i love this book dearly, I just could not give it 5 stars, if it has these racist comments in them, since I just feel like that is wrong.
Also, if Old Shatterhand were in a movie today and he would be a woman, god damn that guy'd be seen as the biggest Mary Sue in history. I wonder if, generally if people today would see this they would even say he's a male Mary Sue, but tbh - I doubt it.
But the bromance between Winnetou and him is free of all toxic masculinity, so I will let it slide.
