So many beautiful passages and quotes in this, such a well written story despite it being less than a 100 pages! Oh unrequited love is such a painful thing.

i had been wanting to read more dostoyevsky after very much enjoying crime and punishment last year, and so when an opportunity came up to read white nights for a book club, i jumped at the chance. i quickly found out they are rather different books! while i enjoyed C&P more, i found white nights to be a thoughtful and introspective short read that managed to subvert my expectations.

this short story demonstrates a respectful man who happens to be a dreamer. A woman almost brought him into reality through heartbreak and the confusion of love but instead of lo of that ruining him, it made him appreciate what he experienced. This heartbreak didn’t turn him into a mean insufferable person. Instead, he blessed the woman and her new husband while thanking her for giving him more than two words and a lifetime of living so he can continue dreaming in solitude. One of the best stories where a man truly loves a woman and doesn’t expect anything out of her.
