I’ve read a number of Pride and Prejudice retellings/spinoffs/whatever and this was a really good one. My only complaint was the epilogue: I really dislike the far-future epilogues that insist on telling you how everyone ends up dying decades later. I do not care; it is not related to the story. This one was particularly annoying to me for some reason. But the rest of the book was great! I loved that Anne got a story to herself, and I like how the author spun her illness. The fact that she got outside out of her situation and took charge of her life was incredibly satisfying.

I really enjoyed this book, it’s light and interesting. I’d recommend it for any Pride and Prejudice fan. It’s an 19th century sapphic novel. I love period pieces that are queer stories. I enjoyed the writing style, it’s even paced and descriptive. I can put myself in the main character’s shoes.

This was a captivating story of a character from Pride and Prejudice- Anne de Bourge. As an infant she was very sickly, so the doctor put her on laudanum (a tincture of opium) to keep her calm. She more likely had a bad case of colic. She continued on this regimen throughout her childhood. She has a very controlling mother and relatively inattentive father. She later decides to blow off this medicine to gain control of her life. Also, she is an heir to a great fortune and has been betrothed to Fitzwilliam (Mr. Darcy).

This was an interesting reimagining of Anne from Pride and prejudice. I love stories from this time period and the author did a spectacular job with the development and growth of this character.

I enjoyed this take of a minor character from Pride and Prejudice. Anne de Bourg is a cousin of Darcy and had been betrothed to him from birth. However, as we know, Darcy marries Elizabeth. Anne is not bothered because she is addicted to laudanum. Eventually Anne takes control of her own destiny - this second part has a more compelling storyline but I also loved the dreamy prose of the laudanum years. Very good story. I got an advance review copy from NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton
