Horatio Hornblower meets Titanic meets Steampunk. Great book, even for YA fiction. The plot was a little predictable but still had some nice twists and turns, some good guys dying, and lots of suspense. The cabin boy, Matt Cruse, is aboard the Aurora, a luxury zeppelin, plying the skies. He is an able young man, working on the same vessel that his father worked, and died, on. Meeting a young woman from a much different social status than his own, he begins an adventure that includes undiscovered species, pirates, and a jealous rivalry. A well done adventure yarn, worth picking up off the shelf. Eeked out 4 stars.

This book was really good. It had a lot of adventure in it and nerve-wracking situations where you just need to keep reading. It really was a fantasy novel, with fake creatures, pirates, airships and deserted islands, this is really a good book that keeps you on your toes.

I have to admit I'm biased - this star rating isn't mine but that of a fourteen year old kid in her refurbished school library, the air sour with fresh paint, clutching the dogshit German translation of the book she'll be reading while things start getting better.
Upon a reread, it still holds up, though. The kind of book that characters in a book would be reading - the most classic adventure story you can think of.

Awesome! Took me a while to get into it, but that last but I could barely put it down! Great characters, witty dialogue, interesting, well-crafted plot. Not much of a moral, but still heartfelt and wholesome. So glad I read this book!

Another YA novel suggested for my friends' family book group. They pick such great titles! A fun romp in an alternative history with lighter-than-air travel, strange new beasts, pirates and an uncharted island. What's not to like? I totally agree with everything that Janelle says in her review.

The perfect adventurous, easy but well written read. Was a favourite when I was young, and rereading as an adult I loved it just as much.
