I loved this and will absolutely be buying a copy someday for my future kids

This book was really good and I really enjoyed it.

The story has somewhat of a similar vibe to Death Note with the 'monster', a creation born from artistic minds being perceived as the monster while the 'good person' turns out to be the actual monster. What would you do?

This book looks at the way people in society behave and looks at how people from different ethnicities, backgrounds, and cultures exist together.

This book does discuss the issue of child abuse and how it impacts communities as well as assumptions made.

Jam, a 15yo trans girl, and her best friend, Redemption, live in Lucille, an all-Black utopian town. Lucille was cleared of “monsters'' during a revolution that happened less than a generation ago, and now all the townspeople live by the creed, “We are each other's' harvest,” a quote from Gwendolyn Brooks. Jam has a loving home with her supportive parents, Aloe and Bitter, and also with Redemption’s sprawling extended family. One day, Jam sneaks into her mother’s painting studio and accidentally drips a bit of blood onto her most recent canvas. Consequently, a “monster” (not an actual monster but just a really scary… beast creature type thing) called Pet emerges with the message that it is there to catch a real monster. Thus begins Jam and Pet’s mission to find the monster that still lurks in Lucille, close to her safe haven homes.

The characters in Pet are all vibrantly portrayed, and their relationships are all so full and loving that you want to crawl inside these families. Of course, the message of this book is that even in the most perfect places, monsters can still lurk, so we need to keep having the hard conversations that make monster-free living possible. This book is good for kids, adults, and people who like trans characters, inspiring stories, adventure, and people who just like reading good books.

This is a very special review, both Jessica AND Mirabelle worked on this, and loved this book. We both agree that if you liked Shadowshaper by Daniel Jose Older, you’ll love Pet. And if you haven’t read Shadowshaper, you should read both!

This was a beautifully written expose about our world and the monsters within it. Queerness was inherent, though not necessarily a focus of the book which was comforting. I enjoyed the way in which magical realism was used to tackle real world issues.
