my absolute favorite book.

A classic read for the sci-fi crowd interested in being up on cult references. The best part of this book is the comedic and satirical approach it takes to science fiction, a genre that is largely uptight and wide open for lampooning.

The writing is not particularly great, due largely to the long and tortured path of the series through radio and television to book form. In this compilation, changes in character personalities and the general tone is apparent, but the stories hang together well enough at the higher level to be interesting. However, there are many genuinely funny moments and clever turns of phrase that demonstrate that Adams was more than just a silly sci-fi nerd--he had chops as a writer, even if his best only shone through on the occasional one-liner or brilliantly absurd paragraph.

Not something I'd recommend for anyone who doesn't self-identify as a sci-fi nerd, but an enjoyable read for those who do. Not the best of the genre by any means, but especially fun in an irreverent manner, one that pokes fun at the sci-fi genre and its memes while managing to introduce some originality, fun, and memorable characters along the way.

Douglas Adams has a way with words like no other. Parallel plot-lines challenge the reader, but the humour and wit with which the book is written will keep you thoroughly engaged and make it very hard to put down.
