This felt like it could have been at least a third shorter. The drug war seemed unnecessary. The magic even seemed like a back burner since the world building was fairly mediocre.

Like the Shakespeare tragedy it is inspired by, One For My Enemy is not a romantic tale. That’s not to say that it doesn’t feature love. But the love it features in multiple forms- parental, sibling, unrequited, unrealised, companionable- is messy, complicated and flawed.

Despite the drama and the inevitable messy ending you can’t help rooting for the lovers torn apart by family circumstance.

I loved the play references in the structure and design of the book, with the story divided in to acts and the chapters renamed scenes.

I am officially OBSESSED by Olivie Blake and will read anything she publishes

It was pretty good, however 'Masters o Death' was better.
Again a book with vibes>plot.
Sometimes confusing
and many deaths. The end is a little bit unsatisfying 'cause you don't know about all characters what the future brings.

This book wasn't for me. I don't think I enjoyed a single second of reading it.

Firstly, there is little to no world building. Witches in New York? Sounds pretty cool in theory, but the execution was sloppy at best and non-existent at worst. The Russian names? Pointless because there's no context of exploring of this culturally within the world I'm assuming Olivie was trying to create. Character development? Very little.

It's a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, so it was never going to be ground breaking. But to me there was no storytelling. It was all exposition. We are told Koschei is bad but never really shown beyond the situation with his sons (an eye for an eye, trying not to give spoilers here). Same goes for Baba Yaga. And most of her daughters did not need to exist. They served no purpose.

Some people seem to really love this book. I personally don't see why. I did not become attached to any characters or enjoy any of the literary plot devices. Its supposed to be enemies to lovers, but the whole enemy thing is kinda stupid. I'm actually surprised I finished it.

Definitely a character driven novel and only enjoyable if you are in the right mood for it, however, I was, and I loved it!! So many laughs, gasps, sad faces, just so good.

‘My daughters are diamonds. Nothing is more beautiful. Nothing shines brighter. And most importantly, nothing will break them.’

Oh how I adored this writing. A thrilling and morally grey Romeo and Juliette retelling. The dialogue was beautiful and heartbreaking and I loved the family dynamic’s. I just fell in love with this book. I haven’t read an Olivie Blake book before and I didn’t know what to expect I really enjoyed it. I was easily swept away and I just adore it all.
