Great book, but not really what I was expecting. There's some ghost stories in here for sure (one fucked up one for certain) but there's also a lot of "cultural" essays that are marginally spooky. I was expecting a straight up book of ghostly tales, but this is not it. Overall, it's still pretty interesting and a really quick read. I don't regret reading it at all.

This book reminded me of "The Book of Tea" in which the author uses this book not only to teach the reader about the main topic of the book but to teach them other relevant things in Japanese culture. My favorite tangent about Japanese culture that the book goes into is incense and the incense-smelling game. Though I also liked the tangent about Japanese poetry and how important it is to their culture.

Das was der/die LeserIn an Grusel erfährt, ist überschaubar, dafür habe ich aber sehr viel über die japanische Kultur und Religion gelernt.

Only read this because my brother is currently living in Japan and he asked me to read some of it. Enjoyed some of the stories.
