After surprisingly enjoying Fellowship, I had high hopes for this one, but Johnny lost me.

My problems with this book really come down to pacing. After splitting up our group from book 1, we now had to follow three separate plot lines. I expected the book to shift to a different storyline every few chapters or so, but instead the book was split into three parts for each group of characters.

Merry and Pippin are on my list. Those two really annoy me, and their story with the Ents, though interesting, quickly started to drag when I realized that was the only story we were getting for a while. Even the Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli crew started to lose me as my mind just started to wonder what was happening with Frodo and Sam (the heart of the story in my opinion). Once I got to that third part, I was absolutely hooked, but I had to trudge through about 300 pages to get there.

Maybe a reread would change my thoughts, but for now it's getting a 3 star from me.
