I fricken love this, it's cute as hell and very well done. I'm so so glad the author decided to expand on the short story and flesh it out into a slightly longer story.

I love both of our main characters and the way their romance develops. I honestly wish it was even longer because I liked it that much!

This is a hard recommend for anyone after a good romantic story!

This was a very quick and enjoyable read. I'm a huge fan of Jae's historical romances and have enjoyed most of her shape-shifter books. Oh, and the detective series, too. Departure from the Script joins the others on my "yep, I liked this book" list.

I won't lie, I was a little annoyed at the number of times the couple were interrupted during intimate times - not just physically intimate, but emotionally intimate, as well. It happened so often that the characters were annoyed, too. But I liked Amanda and Michelle so much that it wasn't that much of a hardship to just roll with it.

The writing was good and the dialogue felt natural. These women felt like real folks and it's always a joy to read a romance that has believable situations and genuine characters. There was no misunderstandings or exaggerated angst - I had not a single instance of wanting to shake the hell out of someone. I don't think I had any bullshit moments, either.

I've already got the sequel loaded up and ready to go.

3.5 if I could.

This one was fun! I loved the grandmother and was glad nothing happened to her.

This book wasn't on my radar at all, but I read [b:Bachelorette Number Twelve|204583545|Bachelorette Number Twelve|Jae|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1704903124l/204583545._SY75_.jpg|210490216], which led me to the Fair Oaks Series ([b:Perfect Rhythm|35335039|Perfect Rhythm (Fair Oaks, #1)|Jae|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1496675242l/35335039._SY75_.jpg|56700886] and [b:Not the Marrying Kind|44175490|Not the Marrying Kind|Jae|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1551551689l/44175490._SY75_.jpg|68713150]). Which then led me to Grace Durand, but since [b:Damage Control|24712341|Damage Control (The Hollywood Series, #2)|Jae|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1422362451l/24712341._SY75_.jpg|44333124] is the second in the Hollywood Series, I decided to start with this one instead. All in all, it has been a very satisfying trip down the rabbit hole!

It’s difficult to pin down my exact thoughts on this book.
On the surface, this seems like a novel I would love: two people, who appear to be complete opposites of each other, form a connection where both would do anything to be with the other person.
That premise seems right up my alley. And so, I was disappointed when I wasn’t particularly swept away by it.

Amanda and Michelle are both likable characters. They’re very different appearance wise as Amanda is femme while Michelle is butch.
I liked how Amanda grew to admire Michelle despite her pre-conceived notions about butch lesbians, but I liked it even more how Michelle seemed to be enamoured by Amanda instantly: it was cute.
They eventually got to a more even playing field with both being equally in love with the other, but I always appreciate a good ‘chase’ in the beginning and this was executed fairly well here.

After the starting point, everything fell a bit flat though. Nothing much happened: no tension, no conflict, no drama. Just.. nothing really.
This got a bit boring over time and even Michelle and Amanda’s easy personalities and sweet relationship couldn’t erase the numbness of their story. I needed more; I needed to feel something. Which I didn’t.

I think perhaps this novel could have had a bit more depth if we would have read from Michelle’s perspective as well, rather than only from Amanda’s. But even then, the story itself would have probably still been too bland to really be good.

It’s a shame, honestly. With a great premise like this, the outcome seems like a wasted opportunity to me.
