I struggled with the middle section and ending. Still, plenty to build on for the next books.

Uh... it's been a while since I finished this so I can't quite remember what I wanted to say. I think a more accurate rating would be 3.5 stars, but, since I'm always feeling really generous, I gave it 4.

I think, in general, this series suffers from some pacing issues. The first book felt more like a prequel, and even in this second book, tension rose and fell at unexpected times. The concept of the worlds is interesting, and I was sufficiently intrigued by the ending that I think I will read the third book when it comes out.

I really liked the plot development, hence the high rating, but the side characters didn't feel fleshed out enough, p.e. I only got to understand Valhan and his motivations in the last 100 pages, but even that was nicely added after you get so much information about him from the protagonists, who both have a complicated history with him. I especially liked how the stories of both protagonist come close to diverging in this book and how events in one story influence the other one.

I love exploring incredible fantasy worlds (there are many of them) and book two has brought me into the thick of this epic series, around 18 hours per book on audio, (how frustrating that someone has borrowed the next book!)...can’t wait to see what happens next. Magically fascinating.

brilliant sequel, couldn't put it down
