I don't know what it was about this book but it just didn't grab me at the beginning and I struggled with it all the way through. I liked the plot but the characters really lacked something. My favorite character was Harlan, the dimwitted muscle man who seems to have his own set of values. Nick was a sociopath with no charisma and everyone else just seems to be unmemorable. It was disappointing to me that I didn't like the book when the summary seemed so great.

I wouldn't say this book is terrible. It had its good points like the plot but honestly I think this might make a better film than a book, it just was lacking something.

This book was frustrating and intriguing all at the same time. Very well written. I love how she incorporated the flashbacks into present day happenings.

The only thing I didn't like about it was how annoying ALL of the characters were. Especially Barbara!!

Home abduction books scare the heck out of me! The scenario plays on some of my worst fears and I find the subject really difficult to read about. However, As Night Falls had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t wait to see who made it out of the house alive.

The setting was typical of home invasion books: the family lives in an isolated area with limited means of getting help when danger arrives. When two escaped convicts take the Tremonts hostage, the family is on their own in a fight for survival.

The characters were good and I liked that the chapters were told in alternating POVs between Sandy and Nick. The reader was able to get the perspective of both victim and villain. Sandy’s daughter Ivy was an irritating character, but she grew on me eventually.

I like psychological suspense books, but the pace felt a little slow for me at times. I was gripped most of the time, but there were sections where I didn’t feel as much intensity as the circumstances required.

The twist was unexpected and I didn’t see it coming. The conclusion was fairly good and I liked that the book could be read as a standalone. The author has several other thrillers set in the Adirondacks and I look forward to checking them out.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Tamara and I featured Jenny Milchman's Ruin Falls on Book Talk with R and T back in October so I knew I was going to love the writing style in As Night Falls. I didn't realize that I would love to hate her characters so much! Even though it doesn't sound like it, that's a good thing!! First of all, Milchman plays on the home invasion fear and causes readers to evaluate what they would physically do in that situation. Then she adds in the psychological layer and tension between the captors and hostages that is both raw and complex.

Fast-paced, psychological thriller based near the Adirondack Mountains. A great vacation read, as long as your vacation is not in a remote, snowy location near a prison.

Sandy, Ben and their teenage daughter, Ivy, live in Ben’s dream house in a remote area of upstate New York. Raising a teenager is emotionally draining for anyone, including the teenager, but Sandy’s secret past is about to make their lives a lot more complicated.

Clues are cleverly interspersed throughout the book, leading the reader to deduce some, but not all, of the outcomes. Short chapters make it easy to read the book in between other activities, but you may want to settle in and binge-read this one.

Thanks to NetGalley and Random House-Ballantine Books for this ARC.

The entire plot of this book was dependent on the two convicts escaping prison by car jacking a woman at a traffic light while they are setting up traffic cones while the prison guard supervising them has his back turned. How are the convicts able to car jack someone without weapons? Well apparently the woman they decided to carjack drives the only 2015 luxury SUV ever made that doesn't have automatically locking doors. And also she is too dumb to get out of her car and run to the guard when two unarmed dudes open her unlocked doors and tell her to drive.
