Broken Chains
By Demelza Carlton

Let me preface by saying, before starting this book, I was already obsessed. A protector and a gargoyle with a librarian whose also a PhD student *chefs kiss*. I was hooked from the first mention of going to Coles for some TimTams. I have no idea why I didn’t expect the location of the story to be Australian, and even more so Perth. Coming from an Aussie it always makes me happy to find a local gem.

Now the actual review. While the book didn’t have the most amazing writing, there were a few plot holes and things that felt rush and didn’t exactly make sense. While all that is true, I really did enjoy the book. It had me laughing out loud at multiple different moments throughout it. I would recommend it to any reader who dreams of a big hot man made of steal to walk through the walls and protect her with everything he is.

Sweet and creative gargoyle romance

The author had a fascinating premise for this story, of an archeologist FMC accidentally summoning a gargoyle. What made it interesting was that she wasn’t at a dig when she found him. The “archeologist summoning at an ancient temple” trope has been done, so it was fun to see a different version.
The FMC was very relatable, as was her family. She had her obvious flaws; procrastination and limited communication skills were the most prominent. The MMC was very insecure and brow beaten, which isn’t typical when the MMC is hot AF.
I felt like the end of the story was a bit rushed. I wanted more time to enjoy the lead up to HEA.

Spice level: 2/5 - 1 spicy scene and mentions of other liaisons

Triggers: captivity, torture (briefly mentioned), mentions of disturbing occult practices

This was a cute read! I love Tor and would do anything for him, the sweet man. I'm less thrilled with Catena as a love interest, but I do like that she eventually figured out what she wanted to do at the end (and got the gargoyle while she was at it). ;)

Wow

This was a really great story. I loved reading it. The characters were well developed and easy to like.
I did feel, though, that the book had some filler fluff in some chapters, so I either skimmed them or skipped them completely.
The part about seeing a certain thing in the wall and it turning out not to be a certain thing was funny and builds it up for the next book.

Really disappointed with this book. I skimmed through most of it. Needless to say, I won't be reading the rest in this series. :(

Really enjoyed this book.

First, the characters - I LOVED Cat. Her sassiness and pragmatism were so endearing. Tor was the biggest cinnamon roll. So innocent and sweet and yet…not.

The spice - I wish there was more. This was a slow burn (about 90% of the book before it gets spicy) but once it got there, it was well worth it. Just wanted more.

The lore and background were really well done. I enjoyed the tie in and nods to archeology. I think this is a great set up for the series and I look forward to exploring it more.

Slow Burn, Fast Conclusion

Overall, it was an entertaining story that left me interested in the next book in the series. The main characters had a slow burn love story that seemed a bit rushed in the end. I hope the next in the series helps to fill in gaps in the underlying mystery of how Tor came to ve in his situation.

DNF'd at the end of chapter 10. It jus wasn't interesting... a lot of unnecessary dialogues, stupid decisions and situations that didn't make sense.
