i didn’t realize that this was the 2017 pulitzer prize winner until halfway through reading, and i really wish this book had lived up to the hype. maybe it’s the writing style or maybe i never got hooked by anything that happened, but on the bright side, the queer representation without major stereotypes was very refreshing.

Que livro enfadonho!
Ou Less, o herói, é um idiota ou então o coração é uma coisa caprichosa. Não é impossível que as duas hipóteses sejam verdadeiras.

really wanted to like this one because there's truly nothing better than middle aged gay people, and I love novels about writers, but this was just so hard to get through that it spoiled the pleasure of reading it for me.

I also felt that the main romance was lacking, I would have welcomed a stronger description of why exactly those two are in love.

and as other reviews have pointed out, it is pretty hard to feel bad for the main character. sure, he's aging and has some troubles with love but he's constantly described as magnetic and attractive, finding friends and lovers everywhere, and his complaining about money and a lack of fame falls flat since the plot is literally him traveling around the world in a seemingly never ending line of career opportunities

Last third of book tipped it from a solid 4 - well written, meandering character study - to a 5.

this never really clicked with me, but i wouldn't say it's a poorly-written book. might like it when i reread it for class, or maybe not
