As the intended audience for this book were teenagers, I can forgive some of the writing and character development. I found this to be an easy-to-read, clear depiction of the opioid crisis and how it does not discriminate based on class, race, or gender. Emory’s role as an over-looked yet heavily depended upon peacemaker made for a lovable, albeit naive, protagonist. 
Overall, there was too much social commentary. Quite literally every social issue, save a handful, was mentioned. With this, many of the supporting characters who drove some minor plot points were unremarkable. They seemed to exist only to move the story along and not as part of the world the author created.

Literally one of my favourite books of all time now. What have I just read. That was an absolute soul crushing masterpiece.

Ok it’s now over two months since I’ve finished this book and it’s yet to leave my head. I haven’t stopped thinking or loving this book since I picked it up. I feel so much love and care for these characters and just want to cherish them. It was so raw and emotional and there is one scene towards the end of the book that I cannot stop thinking about . It was incredible. My favourite book of all time. It is indescribable how much I love this book. Read it right now!!!

Another update from a year and a month later - shocker, I still think about this book ALL THE TIME genuinely the most special and my fav of all time 💕

Pain. Pain. Pain. Pain.

I’m just in pain. This book will leave you in pure agonizing pain, but it’s so worth it.

I was completely caught by this book. Kathleen Glasgow never fails to amaze me with her writing. I’ve been putting the book off for a very long time, since it’s a rough topic, and oh my was it a roller coaster of emotions!

I had to put down the book several times and just cry it out before I could pick up the book again and continue reading. It’s so heartbreaking and so real. 

Once I was done I just lied there for a good ten minutes, feeling almost empty. Oh how this book brought out my feelings in a way no book ever has. 

It’s such a real topic and a very real book that will make you cry, gasp and hope, honestly there might be some screaming of frustration too. But that’s how a book is supposed to be! 

Such an amazing book and story.

When I finished this book I cried for nearly twenty minutes. I’d already been crying for a long time before that. This book hits incredibly close to home and managed to smack you right in the face with such incredible realism and emotion. Almost everything Joey and Emmy said and thought - throughout the book, yes, but particularly right at the very end - struck such a note with me. I fell in love with Joey almost instantly because he was like me. He was messed up and unsure of how to help himself, and this was shown in such a real and honest way that I couldn’t help but love him. Emmy, too; the way she’s desperate to help her brother despite the fact that there’s really nothing she can do is so raw and painful. Absolutely incredible, and a book I will be pushing onto as many people as I physically can.

So, I admittedly went into this one not realizing it's YA, which is not my genre. That said, considering this as a YA book, I think it's an important read about teenage addiction and its impact on families that many teenagers are going to feel seen in. 

I was also heartened by its brave ending that refused to give easy answers, and even further heartened by the author's note explaining her own addiction and sobriety journey, which is most certainly a big part of why, for me, as someone who also has a history of addiction and several years sober at this point, the narrative felt so honest.

Sometimes it did feel like that YA thing where an adult author is imagining what kids these days are like and it's not quite right. 

But overall, a good read and I think an important YA entry.
