"If our stories survive, we will not die, even when our bodies are no longer here on this Earth" - Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai, The Mountains Sing.

Halfway through The Mountains Sing and I had sobbed twice already. Reading this book is like reading about family for me and I'm so glad it exists.

A beautiful, beautiful book.
It was very interesting to go trough Vietnam's tragic 20th century history, for once through the eyes of two civilian vietnamese women, and not american (male) soldiers like we occidental people are used to.
How can a book so tragic be so tender and full of love at the same time?
The simple yet beautiful writing carries this story with power.
In short: I love it, please read it.

A touching story. It's clearly a very personal tale and one told with great feeling. It's harrowing, heart renching and at times the brutality of war and the difficult choices that must be made are powerfully felt.

Stylistically, it's a relatively simple narrative with, at it's best, clean, clear, unadorned prose that still manages to be memorable. There's a definite sense of place and atmosphere, in heat and sound and taste. At its weakest, it is underdeveloped and flat. The characters don't always stand out on their own, but blend into one another. Clumsy dialogue gives way to clunky exposition.

But all the same, I slipped into it easily and kept reading, finishing it in a day. Got a little teary eyed. Certainly appreciated the message of resilience and hope in the face of adversity, as well as the importance of kindness, even when it seems impossible.
