It appears the film follows the main plot of the novel incredibly closely, but wisely removes most of the rather mean spirited meta framing story, which involves the author, a rather unflattering self portrait, abridging a rambling childhood favourite novel. The Peter Falk reading to his Grandson in the film is a version of the author character been read the story by his father.
It seems ironic that the film abridging most of the framing story about abridging the forgotten novel vastly improves it, in my opinion!

Good book! It was nice meeting the characters in the book in words. I think that I would have been happy with the movie representation if I had read the book before the movie. Also, I liked the extra stuff at the end that movie doesnt show
