This book didn’t have noticeable conflict that captured my attention until about 65-75% of the way through, and then it felt like the author tried to shove too much information and plot twists into the last third. The first two thirds felt under developed.

Wonderful world building and interesting complex characters. As a painter, I was captivated by the mystery at the center of the story. I too know how the subjects of my work take on a life of their own. So it was fascinating to see how the author took this idea and played it out until the end.

All that said, the mystery isn’t the story. It’s a novel about what real family means, in all its flawed and subtle glory.

I LOVED this book. Judging from the reviews I’d say my experience as a reader was influenced by relating to the protagonist Pepper. This is like Midnight library x Constance Bones x Orphan 8.
