This is a perfect children's book to learn about Barack Obama. The history books will not tell you Obama's whole story, it will just tell about his presidency. This is a great book to get for your kid(s).

I also really enjoyed the illustrations in this picture book.

I'm glad to have this in my school library, but disappointed in what the normally magnificent, exceptionally talented team of Nikki Grimes and Bryan Collier came up with. The text is bulky and the side conversation between the mother and son is contrived; while the watercolor and collage is nice, it's far from Collier's best or most thoughtful work.

On the other hand, kudos to them both for getting it out so quickly -- there is a high demand and a real need for Obama biographies. (HOORAY!) Even though I think this is a so-so book overall, I know that both students and teachers will check it out all the time.

Well-illustrated and poeticially written, a fine introduction to Barack Obama's life for a child.

I didn’t realize until I read the author’s note at the end that this was written before Barack Obama was elected president. People believed in him back when he was a senator in Illinois! It beautifully tells the story of Barack’s (or Barry’s) childhood, starting as a kid in Hawaii and growing up to be a figure in politics.

This one made me cry. Oh, tear up. But at work, so it's like I cried. We cannot go backwards. Hope.

Beautifully illustrated, and great biography of our 44th president. Told until before the election. Tells of his childhood, parentage, and influences. Continues the theme of hope, and is told as a story that a mother tells his son.

Eloquently told as a story to from a mom to her young African American son, about President Obamas journey from Hawaii to the White House. Beautiful mixed media images with watercolor pencil, photos, ripped paper and fabrics are appropriately combined to tell his multi cultural multi faceted life. Tiny cutout prints continue the mom and son question and answers as Barry Obama turns into president Barack. Hope is personified as a character that talks to Barry and gives him the courage to persevere. A beautiful book in every way writing, art, and history.
