I can appreciate this novel for its literary influence, as a lover of gothic fiction, however I felt the style of writing to be a bit difficult to follow, especially the dialogue. It's interesting to see some of these commonly used tropes when they were considered newer, but I wish the plot wasn't as rushed - the book could easily be twice as long and still flow well. Lots of reference to Shakespeare - both through the use of language and structure. Definitely benefitted from an annotated copy of the book to understand some of the lesser known (to me) references. Probably worth a reread after doing some background reading, in order to appreciate this fully, but can't say that I will be thinking about this much after I shelve it.

i had high expectations bc the gothic genre is my favorite. and this plot had POTENTIAL! but it was so poorly written and walpole’s female characters angered me to my core. what the actual fuck did i just read.
