privileged and boring, I'll give it an extra star for having a good thesis statement although the book rarely pays attention to it

dolly alderton gifts us this beautiful memoir of a book that acts as a therapeutic guide on navigating love, friendships and solitude. she extends out her hand for us to walk around a collection of memories and stories that made up the years in her twentieth decade.

the book offers a refreshing perspective on self-love and the value of being alone, as well as holding onto our loved ones with unconditional love. it tells you that every step we take in this waking life is significant, every core memory plays a factor in who we decide to become in various chapters of our lives.

the book grips you with interest as you stumble upon bizarre shopping lists, extensively written food recipes and random emails from strangers. dolly takes out fragments of her mind and presses them onto pages for us to dip our toes in her world and the many lives she has lead.

‘everything i know about love’ is filled with relatable musings and it is impossible to not have gained something from it. we are all so caught up in our own lives, trudging wearily through all kinds of storms, that we forget about the power of one of the simplest yet paradoxically complex notions known to mankind: love.

love for others, for friendships, for experiences, for ourselves, forgiveness and growth. we are so abundantly surrounded by love that we sometimes fail to see its integral role in our lives, posing as a lifeboat for many of us. there is no specific form of love. it is everything and everywhere.

i appreciated dolly’s character development in the sense that she puts herself out there in such a transparent way, no sugarcoating whatsoever. she is undeniably self aware of her shortcomings but is also gentle towards herself, providing copious space for growth and love.

this book is a reassuring embrace, one that tells me that everything passes and i can come out of it grateful. to me, that is the greatest comfort of all; knowing that no matter how confusing these years tend to be, there will be one constant in it all: love.

I struggled a lot with the first half of this book, I found parts to be relatable and parts to be incredibly difficult to empathize and relate to. But it picked up in the last half as she started to grow up and learn lessons and you get to witness the growth you’re hoping she would half in the first half.

A great book exploring the idea of how important friendship and love are between the multiple women you keep close throughout your life. Highlighting what it feels like to be a woman in your twenties. A great read, very very relatable

“-Ce încerci să controlezi?
- Totul, am spus, conștientizând acel lucru în momentul în care l-am rostit cu voce tare. Încerc să am întotdeauna o influență asupra felului în care gândesc ceilalți despre mine. Asupra felului în care se comportă toată lumea cu mine. Încerc să impiedic să se întâmple lucruri nașpa. Moarte, dezastru, dezamăgire. Încerc să controlez totul.”
