Mabinty Bangura is the beloved daughter of Krio parents who worked hard to give their daughter a chance at education. She learns fast but is stymied in her pursuit of knowledge by the death of her parents and the harsh treatment of her uncle. Given to an orphanage at a young age, Mabinty finds hope in the picture of a ballerina in a magazine. Her adoption and subsequent trip to the United States gives her the chance to follow her dream to become a ballerina.

Such a powerful book, Michaela is such a big inspiration, beautifully written, I was in tears more times than I like to admit. What a strong and beautiful woman, it's a dream of mine to watch her dance live one day.

Her story is interesting but the writing style was off for me. The conversations felt very contrived. You can tell it's written by a young person that hasn't refined their writing.

It definitely felt like this was written for an audience younger than me (who is 27 lol), but I still enjoyed reading this and I love Michaela and have followed her for many years

A thoughtful read. Michaela is a bright light. It's not about this girl who had nothing and became something, but rather a girl who loved big and never gave up.
