๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“ There are a lot of Kleypas PhDโ€™s out there, and I am but a humble student. So, I will just say that this was, surprisingly, my favorite Kleypas book to date. While it has less external plot than some of her other books, I found it possibly even more engaging. Kleypas does a masterful job bringing us along the charactersโ€™ journey as they navigate love lost and found, through their emotional turmoil, without ever weighing the book down with too much angst. (I did not die a Sherry Thomas death here, if you know what I mean.)โฃ

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ I wonder what other Kleypas fans think of this standalone? It feels very different than The Wallflowers. โฃ

All I can say is thank god for the secondary romance in this, as I think I would have DNFed it otherwise. I think the McKenna and Aline romance would work for fans of Wuthering Heights (from which its obviously inspired), but since I am famously a hater, I did not like this. I didn't buy any of their relationship (also not a fan of childhood friends to lovers), and I found their treatment of each other to be incredibly callous. Gabriel and Livia, however, were a delight and I wish the focus had been more on them.

Some unnecessary slowings of the pace, but otherwise the almost Wuthering Heights retelling I needed. And thankfully no babylogue.

As long as you're okay with familiar romance tropes and privileged people not recognizing their own privilege, this is a decent little two-in-one love story, heavier on the sex scenes than what I'm used to with Kleypas, though she tends to be generous in that regard.

A little heavy handed with the melodrama of two adults who refuse to tell one other important information for really no discernible reason, but not in a fashion atypical of the genre. There were noticeable typos in the digital copy I read, which I've noticed before with Kleypas books.
