The Coffin Maker’s Book of Dark Tales is an amazing collection. I took my time reading it because reading horror when you’re the only one awake in the middle of the night doesn’t make it easy to go back to sleep!

I was amazed how each story created a different mood and environment. Some were sad and disturbing but the endings weren’t always dark & without hope.

Some stand-outs for me (though they were all great!):

The New Governess

This story was amazingly creepy. Two evil children & a governess different from all the previous ones they’ve run off. This was a great short story! If this was a novel I would read it!

The Black Book of Nothings

Creepy Lovecraft vibe. An author looking for inspiration.

The Negative

Who hasn’t tried to summon a ghost at a slumber party!? But beware if you’re successful! Excellent, creepy story!

CONTAINERS

Grandma’s a hoarder but she has her reasons!

HUNTER’S NIGHT

A vampire slayer works on Devil’s Night.

AMBER HEAVENS IN LEADED GLASS

Wow. This went places I wasn’t expecting.

I highly recommend this well written, very readable, and unique book. I received a copy for free but am giving this review voluntarily. I would consider purchasing a print copy just for the amazing artwork!

Two heads are better than one in this varied, but consistently good collection of horror. The sadder stories always get me the best, and there are several here, but so all the stories had something to offer. Victorian creepy kids, Lawson’s trademark demonic Detroit, and a heartbreaking urban pastorale we’re all highlights!

Of special note are the illustrated pages that come before each story. The Coffin Maker is a crypt keeper type, but not campy and surprisingly scary! I hope these two collab again, and that this eerie mascot deigns to return too.

I received an ARC (with which I dawdled until it was no longer so “advanced”) but am a new fan of Rex and a more galvanized one of Lawson.
