Young Daiyu navigates life in late 1890’s America, trying to survive ordeal after ordeal in the brutal American west.

Beautiful and sad, an incredible untold history of Chinese immigration and gold rush Idaho.

I would love to read more books like this one, but will need a lighter palate cleanser in between them.

Highly recommend this book if and when you are in a good mental place to handle the traumas the main character endures.

Chills. This book is art. I love the way the meaning of Chinese characters is woven in throughout the story. I also really appreciate how much beauty is shown, even though there is a lot of tragedy. What a great book to cap off AAPI heritage month.

I think this is more like a 4.5 for me but feeling generous so rounding up? Anyway I did really enjoy it. Helped me realize historical fiction (when well-done) is maybe one of my favorite genres now. Beautifully written, the writing flows so smoothly. Lifting up a dark corner of our history that hasn't gotten much attention. The author manages the fine line of navigating trauma without brutalizing her readers.
