Wow. I’m speechless. This book left me in tears and it takes a lot for me to cry. I had never heard of the Chinese Exclusion Act until this book. It is eye opening and heartbreaking to realize that much of what occurred in the late 1880s towards Asian people is still happening in 2022. The authors note is worth the listen. She shares what inspired the story and her own thoughts about racism towards Asian people and Asian Americans.

This is one of the most important books I’ve ever read and contains really horrible American history that many would like our society to ignore and forget. It was very hard to listen to just due to the content alone, but I say that in the best way possible. I think everyone should read this one, just keep in mind that there is a lot of triggering content and should be read with discretion. If you’re looking for something lighthearted, put this on your tbr and keep lookin lol

the ending was so frustrating and depressing, and although this book is fiction, it is unfortunately very realistic for chinese people in the US during this time. it is so important to remember these stories- many of which are based off of true events. this story was so beautifully written yet heartbreaking at the same time.
